The Matzo Ball

Other women are referring to it as a Shamrock. I've got the only Matzo Ball on the March 2013 boards.

The Sweet Life: Part 2

Note to self: When you have to get up at 5:45 a.m. to be at kaiser by 7.... DO NOT go to bed at 1:45 a.m. because you've stayed up late watching the Opening Ceremonies of the Olympics

I had been fasting since Friday night at 9 - midway through "Meet Me in St. Louis." And I could only have water -- not even gum or breathmints.

So I did manage to get up and out of the house - knowing there would be a line just to get into the lab Saturday morning for my three-hour glucose test.

Once I finally got my number - 6 - I took my first blood test.

I then had 5 minutes to down 100g of oh-so-lovely fruit punch. Exactly 1 hour later, and again 1 hour after that, and one hour after that - I had to get my blood drawn again. It was cool, though. Because it was a time test I got to cut the line - so to speak.

During hour 1 I hung out in the lobby of building 5; during hour 2 I went to the optometry department and ordered a new pair of glasses; during hour 3 I went in search of the gift shop (of course it was closed), so I went back to the waiting area of building 5. There were so many pregnant women hanging out there, you would have thought there was a Lamaze class taking place.

Finally, after the last one at 10:15 a.m,. I was able to leave and get some coffee -- four hours sleep and
no coffee makes for a sleepy Shana.

The good news: I do NOT have gestational diabetes. My numbers were all way below and kept going down with each subsequent test.

Thank goodness -- I celebrated tonight with a bowl of Cocoa Krispies.

The Sweet Life

Damn you Glucose Test!

So after I met the ob/gyn nurse yesterday, she said I would need to go to the lab and take some more blood test - plus a glucose test to see if I had Gestational Diabetes. usually they don't test until 24 weeks, but because of family history, they had me do it now.

They had me drink this Orange drink thing (reminded me of bug juice we used to get at camp. Then I had to wait an hour and have my blood checked.

When I asked at the lab how long it would take for the results - they said 2-3 days. It was emailed to me about 3 hours later.

The result - it was high. Duh!

Now, not only wasn't I fasting -  but I had downed some Crystal Lite in the car.

So I got a call from Kaiser asking if I could come in for a three-hour test. Well, the only three hour stretch I have is Saturday (so much for sleeping in).

I'm to go to the lab on Saturday and drink more fun orange stuff - then get my blood tested one hour later, two hours later AND three hours later.

I told Adam it wasn't necessary for him to come (no reason for both of us to be bored out of our minds).

At least the nurse gave me the Wi-Fi password that I can use if I hang in the lobby of building 5.

My father said ":of course it's high - because you are so sweet".

I'm hoping it was a fluke - but I am fighting genetics (and a severe disinterest in veggies).

Faxes and Phones and Emails - oh my!

Last week I filled out a HIPPA form for the clinic - in anticipation of my visit Wednesday with the nurse at the OBGYN (I'm hoping they'll be able to confirm a due date, too). I thought - this will be great - they'll fax me everything and I can just hand them all the paperwork and not worry about it.

I was told it would take five days - which meant I would get my fax today ... and I waited to make sure the fax wouldn't come through and "out" me.

As of 11 a.m. - no fax. Thank you Murphy's Law.

So I contacted the clinic and was told the paperwork would be sent to me as soon as the doctor signed it -- Friday.

Friday? Really?

They said they could send it to my doctor ... a-ha!

All I had to do was call kaiser and get the fax number for the obgyn department.

So I called the obgyn, got their fax and called the clinic back.

It is amazing all the prep and planning you have to do on one end to save yourself time on the other.

Like Writing a Note on the Jumbotron

Whenever I needed to make a call at work that I didn't want anyone to hear - I would go out on the patio.

Thanks to an obnoxious security break - the patio is "exit only."

This means I have to get VERY creative with conversations.

Low tones only work so well.
Our office has NO insulation - so everything bounces around.
The hallway is a great option - when no one else is in it.
I can use someone's office - if they aren't there.

So I am stuck either making calls from my car - or hoping there is enough activity going on in the office that no one can hear me.

This will be so much easier in September.....

God Bless the Co-Pay

The fertility clinic we were sent to works with Kaiser -- and works with kaiser coverage.

So adding up all the times I went their - and the different check ups - would have cost more than $3,000.

It cost about $200!

The medication and injections cost more (of course).

There's nothing like receiving a bill that says "paid" on it.

Buble Says It Best....

I might have to wait, I'll never give up
I guess it's half timing, and the other half's luck
Wherever you are, whenever it's right You'll come out of nowhere and into my life.
And I know that we can be so amazing

And, baby, your love is gonna change me
And now I can see every possibility.
And somehow I know that it'll all turn out.

You'll make me work, so we can work to work it out.
And I promise you, kid, I give so much more than I get
I just haven't met you yet....

...And Sara Laughed

Last night I got an email from my mother that if we had a boy, we would need to have an Orthodox mohel perform the ceremony. And if the bris had to be on Shabbat, he would need to stay at the house.

I told her that there is a Chabad and that I could arrange to have the mohel stay there (again pretty early for this discussion).

I told Adam about the email and his response was - "why should we have a butcher stay here?!?"

I thought it was calling the mohel a butcher, because of what he does.

I then realized he confused the term mohel with schocet (a butcher).

And we got a really great laugh out of it - and it felt good.

Stuck in a Moment

I realize I out myself in an interesting conundrum.

If this first cycle doesn't work - I can talk about doing a second cycle.

However, if it does work - Jewish superstition prevents me from talking about it - except for immediate family

You've got to get yourself together
You've got stuck in a moment and now you can't get out of it
Don't say that later will be better now you're stuck in a moment
And you can't get out of it....

Waiting... and Waiting...

I've been thinking... looking at all the dos and don'ts of what you can and can't do. I'm trying to keep it in mind right now - just in case. No deli meat, limiting the caffeine, no cat litter.

But how much of it is fact vs. fiction?

Really - women for hundreds of years have been having kids -- but, apparently, they were all wrong about everything.

I found an article on 50 dos and don'ts.

This one is my favorite:

Can I ride a bike during pregnancy?

because I couldn't before.... :)
